Farming practices in Ireland are undergoing change at an ever-increasing rate. Many farms are amalgamating and expanding with a resultant increase in intensification, which increases the risk of disease spread. Additionally freer movement of animals and people has imposed greater challenges. With the increased potential for diseases such as IBR, BVD and Johnes Disease to be carried by animals entering the herd.

The causes of, and solutions to, some of the more commonly encountered diseases are outlined under the appropriate headings.
