HeartsafeTM Programme and Pfizer

Heartsafe LogoPfizer has partnered with the Irish Heart Foundation to train colleagues in Cardio Pulmonary Resusitation (CPR) and/or in the use of Defibrillators (AED'S).  The programme that is involved is called Heartsafe TM

The Heartsafe TM Community Programme is an Irish Heart Foundation (IHF)  initiative which aims to encourage all communities to strengthen every link in the ‘Chain of Survival’ in their community. The ‘Chain of Survival’ concept comprises four vital links that can save a life: Early Access, Early Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Early Defibrillation and Early Advanced Care.

Pfizer Staff Train in Heartsafe

Since 2006 colleagues across all of the Pfizer sites in Ireland volunteered to be trained in CPR and/or the use of AED's.  In total more than 900 colleagues have been trained and each of the Pfizer sites has AED's situated at key locations to ensure a speedy response in the event of an emergency.

heartsafe carrigalineIn October 2006 Pfizer staff in collaboration with members of the Order of Malta, Elite Ambulances, the Lions Club, the Ambulance Service and the Fire Service trained more than 300 members of the public in CPR.  The aim of the day was to equip locals with the skills and knowledge to perform CPR and therefore potentially save lives. This inaugural meeting marked a significant milestone in teh Pfizer Heartsafe initiative, bringing the skills learned by colleagues through the programme out into their local communities.

The Chain of Survival

The Chain of survival concept comprises four vital links that can save a life:

  • Early Access
  • Early Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Early Defibrillation
  • Early Advanced Care

Survival rates from cardiac arrest decreases by 7-10% every minute, thus prompt response by a trained member of the community could save a life.  In ireland, 11,000 deaths occur annually from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and it is estimated that 6,000 of these are from a sudden cardiac arrest.  70% of cardiac arrests occur out of hospital and usually occur in the presnece of a familyl member or friend. Knowing how to perform CPR can help to save a life.
